These volumes cover the year 1938–a central year in the working of ‘provincial autonomy’ under the Act of 1935. The documents brought together here have been selected from a wide variety of sources available within India. There is a preface by the General Editor and an introduction and annotations by the editor. The volumes document the major political, economic and socio-cultural developments at the all-India and provincial levels, the functioning of Congress and non-Congress ministries and their policies in the provinces, and the rapid growth of political activity in the princely states. The editor has selected and organized the documents thematically, and provided background information where necessary, with a view to probe the diversity and complexity of the political process at different levels of the Indian body-politic. The volumes provide substantial materials for a rounded view of the political history of late colonial India and are valuable for all scholars of Indian nationalism and British imperialism.
