This book makes a comparative study of the traditional and modern political institutions of governance in Nagaland, with special reference to the Sumi Nagas. Tracing the origin, migration and emergence of chiefship of Sumi tribes, it describes in detail the traditional Sumi Naga Chief, with special focus on his succession, powers and functions and important features of Chiefs administration.
Further, it discusses at length the traditional village Council—procedure of selection, executive functions and judicial powers. The impact of Christianity, modern education and electoral politics on Sumi Chieftainship has been analyzed as well.
