The concept of Academic Staff colleges, which have been in existence almost for two decades, has gone a long way in promoting and improving the quality of higher education in this country. The book has a selection of the related information that had gone in the establishment of the framework of National policy on Education (1986/92/2000) by the government of India and which ultimately lead to the creation of Academic Staff colleges in the Indian university education and or higher education system. The book has a special chapter dedicated on the private initiatives in academic staff colleges together with information on the various orientation and refresher programmes of earlier as well as recent years together with a few examples of course contents as practiced in University Academic staff colleges. Since teaching is a learning process as well, the development of a teacher is thus a continuous process. The book, therefore, has been titled "Training and Development in Higher Education: Academic Staff Colleges". It is expected that the book should be helpful to the teachers of higher education which will also help them to improve their professional capabilities to be a good, effective and successful teacher.
