The present anthology presents a modest survey of the trends and techniques in contemporary Indian English poetry, primarily of the 1980s and 1990s. A critical perspective of the poetic development over the last two decades is essential to promote a greater self-awareness, a more accurate knowledge of native traditions, and a greater insight into their modern transformations. These are initial preconditions for initiating relevant and useful debates about the function and practice of contemporary Indian English poetry. This anthology also consists of a section devoted to the trends and techniques in the poetry of contemporary Indian language poets. A comparative perspective can lead to further insights into the well-known cultural traits of Indian history and literature such as eclecticism, multi-lingualism and multi-culturalism.
