Tribal people being the original inhabitants of India, constitute a significant part of this vast nation. They have been dwelling in the forests surrounded by hills for a long period. Their social structure, their culture and their language are quite different from the general people of India. In course of time, in the post-independence era, a lot of changes have taken place in the tribal areas due to immense endeavours of the government for their socio-economic development. But, inspite of all endeavours, they are still poor as well as illiterate and are far from the main stream of Indian society. This book comprises the study of tribal life and their relation to forest in historical as well as in modern perspective.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Devendra Thakur
Dr. Devendra Thakur (b. 1939), D. Litt., a former Professor in L.N. Mishra College of Business Management, P.G. Deptt., B.B.A. Bihar University, Muzaffarpur, is Ex-Member, Bihar College Service Commission. A leading educationist, he has taught Economics, Co-operation and Extension in the Rural Institute of Higher Studies, Birauli for more than a decade. He completed his Ph.D. in 1970 and D.Litt. in 1989. He was awarded post-Doctoral Fellowship by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India to study problems relating to Tribals. He visited Naples, Italy, on Italian Government Scholarship to study plan implementation course. A number of articles written by him on Education, Socio-Economic and Political problems have been published in reputed journals of India and also dozens of talks have been broadcast by him fro A.I.R., Patna. He is also author of a number of outstanding books.
