The information contained in the book is necessarily somewhat superficial, given the enormous range it sets out to cover. Much more details is now available in specialized works mentioned in the bibliography. Many of these works are highly technical, not readily available in tropical countries and/or extremely expensive, it was felt desirable to produce a sixth, and substantially revised edition. It has also realized to widen the scope of the text by the inclusion of a number of species which are not Sri Lankan. The names in the old edition have been changed, are shown in the Index of Scientific Names to facilitate tracing. Certain more recent changes have been incorporated in the matter of Ferns, Cacti and Succulent plants. All the entomological photographs and line drawings in chapter 34 are reproduced. Chapter 35 on plant diseases has been re-written. It is hoped that this all will increase the value of the book as a world-wide source of reference.
