This study is an attempt at explaining the social structure of India with reference to untouchability. It also explains the involvement of the government in this social problem by way of legislation and interpretation as well as its implementation. Recent constitutional amendments regarding untouchability have also been taken into account. The author has treated the facts, objectively. The work-aimes at the enlightenment of the readers regarding the spirit of laws and their use and misuse and their politicization. It also, attempts, modestly, to show, how stop the malpractices of the Protection of Civil Rights Act, 1955. ABOUT THE AUTHOR K.D. Purane

Kantilal Purane is presently Reader at Shri Shiv Chhatrapati College, Junnar, University of Pune. Born in Babhulgaon, a small village in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra, he has had, inter-disciplinary education in Political science and Law. Later, he completed his doctorate, studying the legal aspects of the Protection of Civil Rights Act and Prevention of Atrocities Act. he has attented many seminars and refresher courses at the state and national levels. He has published a number of research papers, however, teaching is his first love. this is his first book, while a few more are in the wings.
