Urban Issues and Environment Challenges takes a hard look at a wide spectrum of urban and environment issues, both general and specific. Under the gamut of urban issues it examines the Fallout of Urbanization, Problems of Municipla Governance, Human Resource Development, Legislation, Resource Mobilization, Urban Services, Urban Poor and Citizen Participation. In the section on environment it analyses the issues of Global Warming, Climate Change and the Copenhagen Accord, Disaster Management and Non Conventional Energy.
Some of the contents of the book were published as articles in national journals, as papers presented at national and international seminars and conferences, or as part of project assignments undertaken in India and aborad by the authors individually. Although written over the span of last few years, they have urgent relevance even today, since they depict the growing management and environmental problems confronting the cities and the institutions governing them.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Hafiza Golandaz
Hafiza Golandaz, Ph.D. Is the Executive Director of International Leadership and Management Alliance. She has 25 years of post-doctoral, multidisciplinary experience in training, research and consultancy. For nine years, she has served as Professor and Director, Regional Center for Urban and Environmental Studies (under the auspices of Ministry of Urban Development, Goverment of India) at AILSG covering 500 municpal bodies in western India. She has numerous research publications to her credit. Her doctoral study 'Bureaucracy and Municipal Government'. A study of Surat Municipal Corporation' is considered as a pioneering contribution in the field. She is a US International Visitors' Fellow. She has served on number of international and national level task forces and committees. Government of India had appointed her as the Convener of the Human Settlements Managers' Group for preparation of the UN-Habitat-II National Plan of Action.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR L N P Mohanty
Dr. L.N.P. Mohanty, was born on the 14th December 1955. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in Political Science from Utkal University in 1989. He works as a Reader in Political Science in Orissa, and had served on deputation for a period of six years till February, 1996, first as Regional Director of All Indian Institute of Local Self Government, Bhubaneswar and then as Professor of National Institute of Habitat Management, Bhubaneswar. He has been associated with training, research and consultancy in the field of Urban Management and Local Government. Being selected by Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute as a Faculty Research Fellow, he was in Mc Gill University, Montreal, Canada from February to August, 2001. Besides publishing articles in various journals and newspapers, he has authored 2 books in English, 2 books in Oriya and co-edited one book in English.
