The book focuses attention on the informal labour in the fast growing port city of Visakhapatnam of Andhra Pradesh. It is basically a case-study and provides the supply side analysis of the urban labour market. To examine the impact of caste, kinship, skills etc., on labour absorption and also to analyse the impact of social background, economic conditions and demographic factors on the work force participations, multiple regression technique has been employed in the study. The need for building up an integrated development strategy based on an economic and technological linkages between the formal and informal sectors, is duly suggested. The whole study is divided into eight chapters under these broad objectives: to trace the pattern of employment both in formal and informal sectors; to discuss the patterns of absorption and mobility among the workers in the informal sector; and to examine the structure of sectoral variations in earning and likely determinants of these earnings in the informal sector. The book will prove a valuable asset to all institutions which have Economics and Economic Development as subjects.
