Admiral jayant Ganpat Nadkarni, PVSM, AVSM< NM< VSM (Retd) joined the India mercantile marine Training Ship DUFFERIN in 1946. On completion of training he joined the Royal Indian navy (RIN) in March 1949 and did his initial training in the UK. He is a graduate of the Defence Services Staff College and the naval war College, New Port, Rhode Island. His important shore appointments include Chief Instructor at the Defence Service Staff College, Wellington, Chief of Staff of the Western Naval Command and the Senior Directing Staff at the national defence College, New Delhi. He commanded the Western Fleet from May 1981 to August 1982 and was Chief of personnel at naval HQ from 1982 to 1984. He was then appointed as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-chief of the eastern Naval Command and became the Vice Chief of the Naval Staff in February1986. On 30 November 1987 he became the 13th Chief of the Naval Staff. He retired in November 1990. Admiral Nadkarni is married to Mrs Vimal Nadkarni and they have two sons, one whom is a Captain in the Indian navy. Since retirement he has settled in Pune. He was one fot6 eh founding members of the centre fro Advanced Strategic Studies, a think tank in Pune and served as its Director for three years. He writes on defence subjects frequently in newspapers and internet magazines.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Gen V. K. Kapoor

Lieutenant General V K Kapoor, PVSM (Retd) commanded an armoured division. He has been Deputy Director of Military Operations at Army HQ, and instructor at the DSSC and the College of Combat, Mhow. Prior to his retirement in March 2003, he was the Commandant of 5the Army war College. He is a member of the USI Council.
