Chandaka-Dampara Wildlife Sanctuary, situated in Khurda and Cuttack districts of Orissa, consists of semi-evergreen forest, dry mixed deciduous forest and bamboo brakes. Elephants form the most important vertebrate of these forests. Chandaka-Dampara Wildlife Sanctuary has an area of 193.39 sq km with a very rich biodiversity, and especially along with its elephant population, was elevated to a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1983. However, due to its proximity (25 km) to the capital city of Bhubaneshwar and the increasing human population, the anthropogenic pressure on the forest has increased considerably during recent years. A stringent conservation measure is needed for the protection of the biodiversity of this Wildlife Sanctuary. The Zoological Survey of India has so far published the faunal inventory of two conservation areas of Orissa viz. Simlipal Tiger Reserve and Chilka Lake. Studies on the faunal diversity of Chandaka-Dampara Wildlife Sanctuary has been negligible except for Tiwari et al. (1998) on mammals of the Sanctuary. Hence, to conserve the rich faunal diversity of the Sanctuary, an extensive study was undertaken between 1995 and 1998, and the present volume covers a comprehensive account of the vertebrate fauna of the said Sanctuary. This document is therefore, the first ever consolidated account of the vertebrates occurring in the Sanctuary. The present volume includes a systematic account of 37 species of mammals, 167 species of birds, 33 species of reptiles, 13 species of amphibians and 28 species of fishes. Almost all groups are represented by coloured photographs for most of the species recorded in the respective chapters.

Dr. Siba Kanta Dutta (b. 1946), presently lecturer in the Department of Political Science, D.H.S.K. College, Dibrugarh, Assam is a seasoned teacher of more than two decades standing. He got his M.A. degree with a first class from Gauhati University in 1968 and doctoral degree from Dibrugarh University in 1989.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Shiv Kumar Tiwari
Dr. Shiv Kumar Tiwari (1941) took his B.A. (1962) and M.A. (1964) degrees in First Division. He is the first Ph.D. recipient in Geography from Jabalpur University and the first Indian geographer to successfully complete a doctorate research in Biogeography. He has worked in Government Post-Graduate Colleges of Madhya Pradesh since 1964 as Lecturer, Assistant Professor and Professor. He now holds the post of Head of the Department of Tribal Studies in Rani Durgavati University, Jabalpur. Dr. Tiwari has so far authored more than a dozen books in diverse academic fields. His books Readings in Indian Zoogeography Zoogeography of India and South East Asia and Zoogeography of Indian Amphibians are widely recognized works in the field of Zoogeography. He has four times been assigned to write books for collegiate education by the Government of Madhya Pradesh.The Rajgond his fifth book in this field, was also published by Agam Kal Prakasan (1992). Dr. Tiwari has written many research papers, general articles and monographs. He has so far directed six research Projects funded by UGC, ICSSR and Madhya Pradesh Council of Science and Technology. His works have been acknowledged by National and International Research Institutes like RMRC (Indian Council of Medical Research, AIU (Association of Indian Universities), Smithsonian Institute of Woodrow Wilson Centre, USA and University College, London, UK.
