The Present volume titled War of Indian Independence: 1857 (Before and After) s the sixth volume in the ongoing series Cross-currents of Indian History and Culture. The period covered is 1857 to 1920. The volume is Divided into two P{arts: (1) The Dawn of new India and (2) A nation in the Making. The First part furnishes an exhaustive account of the Revolt of 1857, its background, outbreak, suppression and general review. The Revolt was the first national uprising against the foreign domination and was crushed with barbarity. It ended an era and sowed the seeds of a new epoch. Part Two deals with the growth of nationalist movement form 1858 to 1920. It witnessed two major phases of freedom struggle –The liberal nationalism as represented by Dadabhai Naoroji, Gopal Krishna Gokhle and Sir Pherozeshah Mehta and the militant school whose teachers were Lokmanya Bal Ganga-dhar Tilak, Lala Lajpat Rai, Bipin Chandra Pal and Sri Aurobindo. The partition of Bengal I 1905 and its annulment in 1911, the Home Rule Movement and the Introduction of the Morley-Minto reforms were major landmarks in the national evolution. The study also deals wit the development of India under the British Crown by an analysis of the role of English education, impact of Western culture, new social and economic conditions, religious ideas, literary renaissance, beginnings of press and the genesis of communalism. The Volume also includes or rather begins with a discussion of the attitude of Indians towards British Rule and British policy towards India.

A.N. Kapoor After obtaining M.A., D.Phil, in English from Allahabad University, Dr. Kapoor taught English at Agra and Delhi Universities for over four decades and has edited, compiled and authored more than hundred titles including reference books, encyclopaedias and language dictionaries. His dictionary of geographical terms published in 1955 was the first work of its kind in Hindi. His comprehensive English-Hindi dictionary stands as the crowning work of the four decade long effort. The lexicon is considered a work of tremendous relevance for the entire gamut of bilingual activity, being undertaken in the country as almost all levels of our social system, educational institutions and government department.
