This book is essentially a compendium of my six books on our civil War, namely "The Agony of Sri Lanka" (1983), "The Dilemma of Sri Lanka" (1933) and "War or Peace in Sri Lanka" (Volume I to IV) written between 1995 and 203. Manmohan Bhatkal, Chief Executive Officer of the Popular Book Depot of Mumbai read them during his frequent visits to Sri Lanka and invited me to write an international edition in five hundred pages, half the combined length of the six original books. In that endeavour Shivani Ganesh, the Editor (English Publications) of Popular Prakashan (Private) Ltd. Of Mumbai, was of immense help to me. Then Manmohan Bhatkal wanted the international edition to be of racy style which can be read in one sitting. I invited him to be the Editor-in Chief of such an envisaged book. He chopped and changed the text and this three hundred page book is the nett result of our labour! Indeed I am most grateful to him. Vans Information Limited typed the numerous revisions in exemplary manner, under relentless pressure. While this marathon effort was on, Godwin Fernando, my classmate at the University of Ceylon and Director of Research on all my books and S.S Wijesinha, Retired Secretary General of Parliament, and the Chief Moderator of my last ten books rendered yeoman service, as usual. The Nasa Communications in Colombo-3, consisting of A.H.U. marikkar and his two daughters Rameesa and Rasheeda assisted me splendidly with the logistic support, under tremendous pressure. Lt. general Nalin Seneviratne, Retired Commander of the Army, Admiral Mohan Samarasekera, Retired Commander of the Navy, Air Vice Marshal Harry Goonetileke, Retired Commander of the air Force, Rudra Rajasingham, Retired Inspector-General of Police Bradman Weerakoon Retired Secretary to the Prime Minister and W.T. jayasinghe, Retired Forign Secretary, checked the scripts for authenticity in their areas of speciality.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR T.D.S.A. Dissanayaka

T.D.S.A Dissanayaka is Sri Lanka's leading authority on current affairs. In War or Peace in Sri Lanka he traces the genesis and history of the Sri Lankan civil war. As a long serving diplomat and a close friend of many players who guided the nation's destiny, he gives us a ring-side view of the going on in the bloody drama of the ethnic Tamil strife for identity. There is a momentous meeting with LTTE chief, Prabhakaran and a special chapter on Indian's clumsy interference which ended in the tragic assassination of Rajiv Gandhi. He makes a fervent plea for tolerance and brotherhood in fellow Sri Lankans so that the country can go back to living justly and in peace.
