ABOUT THE AUTHOR Saranya Nandakumar

Saranya Nandakumar did her schooling in Good Shepherd Convent, and her MBBS from Madras Medical College. In 1985, she completed her post-graduation in microbiology from the same institution. Both parents being active on the library and literary scene, she grew up surrounded by book, and developed a love for writing and reading. She worked as a microbiologist in Lister Metropolis Laboratory, a leading diagnostic lab in Chennai for over 18 years before retiring as its director in early 2004. She is one of the founder-trustees of the Jeevan Blood Bank and Research Centre, which promotes safe transfusion practices. She has made several presentations at national and international conferences in Australia, United States, Thailand and South Africa and written papers for leading medical journals. She regularly contributes articles on public health to the national newspapers. Saranya lives in Chennai, where her other interests are listening to music, traveling and trying out recipes. her elder sister is a paediatrician and her son is studying science inthe US. She dedicates this book to her parents Sri S.N. Kumar and Smt Suseela Kumar who, she says," have been with me in spirit through the entire writing of this book. Their biggest gift to me was their unstinting love and confidence in me."
