This work on inter-caste and inter-religious marriages is a result of the author, Lina Fruzzetti’s long-time fieldwork in India. With detailed case studies from Bishnupur, West Bengal, it probes aspects like society’s concern with such marriages which it believes are wrongly grounded and the way women in particular cope who their families’ rejection of their choices. It examines how the women negotiate new boundaries in the course of asserting their rights and refusing the traditional rite of marriage and their role as custodians and preservers of tradition. It delves into the conflict they face with the expectations of their families, the society, and their caste and religious communities. The study explores aspects linked to the meaning of liberty, violence and search for the ideal way of life with respect to the female perspective.
