This book is a classic account of wildlife in India. The author has spent several years among the forests in the heart of which now sits the famed Kanba National Park.
By far the single best book on Indian wildlife, it is a treasure house of information and is a delight to read. The book is important because it records the observations of a well-trained forest officer, and an astute student of wildlife, who wrote about animals in preference to his exploits as a Shikari.
In many respects, this account formed the basic reference text of George B. Schaller's important study on Indian wildlife titled "The Deer and The Tiger". Though this book first appeared in 1923, it is of immediate relevance not only on account of the high quality of scientific information but because it forms a benchmark against which the status of wildlife and its habitat may be measured today. Considering, indeed, the vastly increased awareness of man's destructive encroachment on our diminishing flora and fauna, this book is of significant importance.
The book can be read with profit by students, conservationists, naturalists behaviourists, sportsmen and readers who simply enjoy a fine book. Excellent photographs accompany the text.
