Though in principle women has a high place in Indian society, in practice, decidedly with intense gender inequalities they are a less privileged class facing various types of exploitation since remote past. Of late, an awakening among women and a consciousness to improve the lots of women on the part of the Government has emerged in the process of development during planned era. The book Women and Rural Development Programmes is an attempt to assess the extent to which these development policy and programmes under Five Year Plans have been able to really improve the status and the lot of women in Indian society.
