In the pre-independence era, the avenue for imparting education to young girl was negligible. Even primary schools were not visible. The funds for basic education were scanty. However, we find a drastic change under welfare and developmental schemes that a system of education has been planned. There are numerous young girls who have started going to primary and higher secondary schools. Even they have joined professional courses, including medical and engineering. In a huge population, we find systematic progress. But still more is to be achieved as yet. The theme has been dealt with in a comprehensive way covering several aspects of social change among women in the Indian sub-continent.
