Since the socio-cultural structure of the Indian society is undergoing rapid changes the gender studies as well as the studies of the developing regions have become a vital part of the sociological scholarship. Naturally a study like Women and Socio-Cultural Changes by Dr. Swati Shirwadkar which is a study of the socio-cultural changes in the life of women in a developing region becomes immensely important. The present study, while examining the factors influencing the change, traces the historical antecedents of the life and culture of Marathwada as manifested in the world of women and puts the consequential problems in a comprehensive and holistic context. The importance of the internal urges for change as well as the external urges for change as well as the external contacts of surrounding cultures and their interactions have been duly explored and explained. The author also examines closely the changes in the behaviour and attitudes owing to the actions and activities of individuals and institutions in the process. On the whole the total scenario of socio-cultural change in perception and practice comprising the position, the status and the role of women have been brought out with scholarly insight. The study is a focus on the issues of macro importance through a research on micro-reality.
