"The predominantly rural nature of the developing and least developed countries of the world places the rural women in a development perspective which is marked by hard labour, inadequate returns and problems of maternal and child welfare. While national as well as international agencies have been aware of the crucial role of rural women in agricultural development and therefore overall economic development of a nation, and have been supporting, financing and developing programmes to benefit them, much remains to be done in developing countries including India. The present compilation of articles, papers and other relevant material seek to provide readers with a broad overview of some of the main features and characteristics as well as illustrations of the quality of life of the millions of women, young as well as old, engaged in agricultural and rural occupations for livelihood as well as economic betterment. Rural poverty and related determinants of occupation and employment in the countryside have been also touched on and the work of women’s cooperatives are seen in an encouraging light. The present publication will be a valuable addition to the libraries and documentation units of all colleges, universities, institutions and other organised groups engaged in the area of women’s development."
