In the world our country stands of 7th largest producer of fish. In the context of Orissa, the geographical situation has blessed the state with maritime status that offers considerable scope for development of island and maritime Fisheries. In India, even though women are not involved in active fishing in marine fisheries, they contribute substantially in the pre and post harvest operations. The present work is bused on both primary and secondary sources of data. Production trend of fishery in Indian states like Kerala, Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Orissa have been discussed at length. The participation of women in fishery sector, their problems and future prospects have been analysed in detail. Comprehensive analysis of Govt. Policy during Plan period has been discussed. The study is analysed from macro to micro and will be immensely helpful to Planners, Policy makers, researchers, economists and general readers in formulating policy paradigms.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Tanuj Kumar Bisoyi

Dr. Tanuj Kr. Bisoyi post graduated in economics from Berhampur University (Orissa) and did his M. Phil from the same University in the year 2000. He is an active researcher and completed his Ph.D. work under the guidance of Dr. S.N. Tripathy on the topic ‘Problems of Prospects of Fisher Women in Orissa’. Dr. Bisoyi has several research write ups to his credit published in various journals and edited volumes. Presently, he belongs to the department of economics, Kabi sursa Baladev Mahavidyalaya, Kabisuryanagar (Orissa).
