This is a comprehensive study on the status of slum women in the city of Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. Specifically, it focuses on the ways in which slum women lead their lives, the problems they encounter and the mechanisms they adopt to face the situations. Unlike many slum studies which emphasize the economy of slum life and physical amenities available to them, this study focuses on gender issues, analysing the nature of gender gap, gender discrimination and gender oppression in a slum situation. It also deals with the growing-up process of females in slums. The nature of human rights violations in slum is such that women suffer silently and resign to their fate. This book emphasizes the need to strengthen various developmental programmes to enhance the status of slum women.
