In India policies and programmes of the government at different levels covers various dimensions and strategies of gender development. Over the years, efforts have been made to empower women socially, politically, economically. However, due to lack of synergy and coordination, the achievements are not satisfactory. It is imperative that an integrated policy and strategy to be formulated to address economic, social and po0litical issues related to women along with the requisite programmes and schemes. Though India has created protected legislator for women, the enactments have not been easy to implement. The vastness of the country, the scattered nature of women workers, their lack pf education and illiteracy, the indifferent attitude of the government bureaucracy have all contributed to the continuing vulnerability of women. This is true not only of rural unemployed women, but also of urban women workers. Although the constitutional commitments to women find reflections in the planning process, legislations, policies and programmes of the central and state governments yet the current socio-economic states of women is unsatisfactory in terms of almost all important indicators of human development. The book has emerged from the research papers contributed by social scientist and academician from different parts of India, focusing on specific gender related issue. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Rameshwari Pandya

Dr. Rameshwari Pandya did her B.Sc. and B.Ed. from Lady Irwin College, University of Delhi and secured her M.Sc., M.ed. and Ph.D. degrees from the Mahaeaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, Vadodara, Gujarat. She is the recipient of Shrinati Leela Ben Shah Gold Medal for her academic excellence. She is a senior faulty member in the Faculty of Family and Community Sciences at the Maharaja Sayajiro Univeristy of Baroda. She is in-charge of Pragati, the urban extension wing of the Faculty. She is a member of the Board of Studies, the Senate, and Syndicate of the University. Dr. Panday has published 10 books and 100 research papers in professional journals of repute. She has successfully completed several projects including one major project titled Promotion of Communal Harmony funded by Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), New Delhi. She has attended and organized a number of workshops, seminars, conferences and short-term courses at the state, national and international levels.
