This book is an attempt to understand women’s silent struggle for getting power and position in the society and family. Various issues, challenges and strategies for women’s empowerment are given an in-depth treatment in this book. Besides having basic issues, some unexplored areas are also touched. Although it targets Indian women, it does not ignore global efforts and movements. The incidence of gross social injustice and discrimination, which is victimizing women everywhere, is specially covered. Although by and large secondary sources are utilized, in some chapters, first hand data is also presented. The book is divided into three parts dealing with theoretical background, issues and challenges and the strategies of empowerment. Four chapters in the introduction analyse the situation of Indian women both in the present context and in the historical perspective and present the concept, philosophy and indicators of women empowerment. Six chapters in the second part, reveal the social, economic and political dimensions of women’s empowerment and the situation of women of vulnerable sections and ethnic minorities. While explaining the strategies for women’s empowerment in the last four chapters, in the third part, the role of education, legal support system and civil society is highlighted besides an elaborate description of government efforts. Hopefully, the book will provide a good reading material to research scholars, social activists and practitioners.
