Sociology is the study of people. Sociology is a profession which applies or advances the process of scientific inquiry into social relationships and the cultural products of those relationships. It engage in the process of applying or advancing sociological inquiry through numerous forms of employment. Most sociologists are employed in traditional academic settings, i.e., colleges and universities. Other sociologists find employment in non-traditional settings practicing sociology. i.e., government agencies: local, state, federal and international, non-profit agencies and business and industry. However, both types of sociologists, the academic and applied, are legitimate, beneficial and needed.
