The course contents of the second edition of th book entitled "Solid and Fluid Mechanics" are planned in such a way that the book covers the complete course of first year Engineering students of EEE, EIE and ICE of Anna University, Tamil Nadu, according to the revised syllabus on annual pattern. This edition has been throughly revised and made up-to-date. In the second edition, the following additions in solid mechanics and fluid mechanics have been made : 1. Stabulity and equilibrium of plane frames and analysis of forces in truss members, 2.Information of compound (or composite) bars, 3.Bending stresses in beams, 4.Shear stress distribution in beams, 5.Pressure measurement by mechanical gauges, 6.Dimensional analysis with Buckingham's pie-theorem 7.Power transmission through pipes, 8.Boundary layer flows, drag and lift co-efficients, 9.Air vessel in reciprocating pumps, and 10.Rotary pumps (Fear and Vane pumps). The book is written in a simple and easy-to-follow language, so that even an average student can grasp the subject by self-study. At the end of each chapter, highlights, theoretical questions and many unsolved problems with answers are given for the students to solve them.
