With every alternate persons being illiterate, the Indian state launched the national literature Mission in 1988 with a renewed zeal to achieve full literacy by the turn of the century. A campaign approach is being pursued with a district as a unit of operation in 270 out of 500 districts in the country. It is at this time that a comprehensive evolution of total literacy campaigns in one of the middle ranking India State, Karnataka, has been reported here. In holistic as well as discrete ways the study has covered various components of the campaigns such as environment building, primer quality, training of functionaries, organisational and management aspects, classroom transactions, overall impact along with insights regarding post literacy and continuing education programmes, relevance and effectiveness have been discussed.
