With every alternate persons being illiterate, the Indian state launched the national literature Mission in 1988 with a renewed zeal to achieve full literacy by the turn of the century. A campaign approach is being pursued with a district as a unit of operation in 270 out of 500 districts in the country. It is at this time that a comprehensive evolution of total literacy campaigns in one of the middle ranking India State, Karnataka, has been reported here.
