In this book is given a brief account of the principal wild and cultivated species of medicinal plants found within the Bombay Presidency. Species from the area found in the British pharmacopoeia and in the Ayurvedic and Unani systems of medicine, together with those used as popular village remedies, have been included in it. Under each species has been given–(i) its correct scientific name according to the International Rules of Botanical Nomenclature, (ii) the family to which it belongs, (iii) common names in English, Hindi, Gujarati, Kannada, Marathi and Sanskrit, (iv) brief description of its important botanical characters, and (v) habit, habitat and localities in the Bombay state and outside where it is found. Information regarding their active constituents and the vitamins present has been given wherever available. No attempt has been made to evaluate critically the medicinal value of the plants. Other economic uses of the plants have also been mentioned.
