Forest vegetation of Eastern India is significantly rich and even a mere compilation of outline information will go into several volumes. The work in this book, therefore, has been confined to the districts of Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri and Sikkim only as the area is representative of the plant resources of entire Eastern Indian States. It is not a flora and the systematists will hardly get their requirement as in a flora. Cowan’s work of North Bengal has been the basis of the work which has been revised and enlarged, the lacunae in his work have been filled by giving lists of herbs, grasses, sedges, ferns, monocots, etc., providing keys and some ecological informations. List of herb has been compiled primarily from information gathered from various herbaria; others mainly from author’s collection identified in Sibpur. The study would only be complete and extremely useful if this book is ready along with the author’s other published work of the region as in, "The Ecology and Environment of the Himalayas", "Plant, Wildlife and Man", "Environment of Ecology of Herb-Shrub Flora", and in "Environment and Resources of Tropical and Temperate Forests"; all these will provide ecological, botanical, bio-ecological and forestry information of the entire Eastern Himalayan region. It is expected the book will serve the requirements various researchers, foresters, administrators and others who are dealing with plant resources of the region.
