In 1964, Sir Harry G. Champion and Shri S.K. Seth published their monumental work on the forest types of India. Since then, their indepth work has been widely accepted by foresters as the most suitable classification for studying the forest vegetation of India and adjoining countries. However a considerable amount of literature on the forest types of India and adjacent countries has piled up after the publication of Champion and Seth’s classic book. In the previous two decades, new areas have been explored and their forest types described by various authors. This book is an attempt to present a comprehensive picture of the forest types of India by taking the work of Champion and Seth as a base and updating it with the later work of others. Furthermore, the present work describes the forest types of the various states of India. The forest types of Nepal and Bhutan has also been discussed in this book as the forests of these two countries resemble that of the adjoining states of India.
