The volume is a contribution to study of Dalit literature, analysing it as a voice of subversion—the voice of an oppressed section of the population. It explores the writings of Mulk Raj Anand, K. S. Maniam, Namdeo Dhasal, and a range of Dalit feminist literature and Dalit Gujarati poetry to throw light on the plight of the downtrodden in society and articulation of their atrocities by the Dalits. The book contains an interview with the Dalit writer Jai Prakash Kardam in which he discusses the present state of Dalit literature and its future, Dalit consciousness, and difference between Dalit literature by Dalits and that by non-Dalits.
