Problem of Peace-Making in Mizoram

This book presents a history of Mizoram at the time of India’s independence and after. The Mizos had never been conquered before the advent of the British in 1895. The book details their colonisation by the British. It discusses the condition under which the Mizos integrated with free India—the condition that will be allowed to opt out of the Indian Union when they wished to do so. It gives an account of the subsequent declaration of independence by the Mizos and the backlash by the Indian state that saw the Mizo district being declared a disturbed area and declaration of the state of emergency and deployment of the army. It considers the serious human and civil rights violations that have taken place in the state, the mass migrations, and the large-scale loss of life and property over the decades. It focuses on the problems relating to ushering in of peace in Mizoram.
