The last three decades have witnessed extensive experimental studies on Indian herbs and their therapeutic activity. The diverse climate zones of the country and its multitude of flora and fauna provide a wide spectrum of plant groups, including rare tropical species. This ‘herbal abundance’, backed by India’s botanical heritage and the therapeutic systems that have been tried and tested for centuries, provides and excellent means for effective natural healing. The author firmly believes that ‘herbs are vital information on herbs and Ayurvedic formulae, based on classical references, that make it possible to devise effective, safe and helpful home remedies. As such, the book assumes special importance for the lay person.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Dr. H.S. Puri

Dr. H.S. Puri, after obtaining his Master’s degree, joined the Composite Drug Research Scheme of the Indian Coouncil of Medical Researach. On the basis of his research work, he obtained a doctorate from Pubjab University and was awarded a Commonwealth post-doctoral scholarship to work in the University of Bath (UK). While he was in England, the National Institute of Medical Herbalists (UK) conferred on him an honorary membership of the institute. He also received a ‘Specialist Grant’ from the Finland government for conducting research on Indian herbs. He has been conducting research on Ayurvedic herbs for 22 years in many research organizations of the Government of India. During this period he published more that 60 research papers/review articles, and attended many national and international seminars and symposiums. He was awarded the INSA-Royal Society Fellowship by the University of Nottingham (UK). He worked as a short-term consultant for international agencies like UNIDO and FAO. He was one of the three authors of the book, Major Medicinal Plants of India, published by Council of Scientific and Industrial Research.
