Tourism has been considered as an industry of worldwide significance. Infact, for many countries, tourism is the largest commodity in international trade. Now it acts as second largest foreign exchange earner after oil and petroleum. Besides, it also contributes considerable amount on employment, improving standard of living of the people, foreign exchange and thereby facilitating overall developments of a country. While tourism, undoubtedly, helps the economy and society, it creates some environmental problems. The protection, development and improvement of the various constituents of the environment of man are among the basic conditions for the harmonious development of tourism. Having recognished the fact that tourism development and sound environmental management and integral concerns of national development policies the department of environmental economics, Madurai Kamaraj University organized a national seminar on “Tourism and Environmentâ€. This book contains the scholarly contribution of reputed scholars who are pursuing research in this field.
