Tourism has been considered as an industry of worldwide significance. Infact, for many countries, tourism is the largest commodity in international trade. Now it acts as second largest foreign exchange earner after oil and petroleum. Besides, it also contributes considerable amount on employment, improving standard of living of the people, foreign exchange and thereby facilitating overall developments of a country. While tourism, undoubtedly, helps the economy and society, it creates some environmental problems. The protection, development and improvement of the various constituents of the environment of man are among the basic conditions for the harmonious development of tourism. Having recognished the fact that tourism development and sound environmental management and integral concerns of national development policies the department of environmental economics, Madurai Kamaraj University organized a national seminar on “Tourism and Environment”. This book contains the scholarly contribution of reputed scholars who are pursuing research in this field. The inter-relationship between environment and tourism has been grouped under three categories viz., 1. Eco-tourism and Bio-diversity; 2. Role of Government in and towards Sustainable Tourism; 3. Tourism and Environment-A case studies. Nearly papers have been included on the above aspects. The papers unearth the hidden facts of tourism and environment and exhibit few practical suggestions, which are having policy implications. This book would definitely help the scholars, administrators and policy makers who are serving in this field.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR V. Dhulasi Birundha

Dr. Dhulasi Birundha Varadarajan, M.A., M.Phil, M.B.A., M.C.A., Ph.D., aged 51, is the Professor and Head of Department off Environmental Economics, Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai, had 23 years of teaching and research experience at university level. She had published six books o energy and environment, 61 research papers in journals and edited books, presented 173 papers in national and international conferences and recipient of UGC Post Doctoral fellowship. She had visited Japan, Netherlands, Malaysia, Singapore, France, Belgium and Spain to present papers in international forum. To her credit, she guided 47 M.Phil, scholars and 5 Ph.Ds. Her areas of specialization are Energy, Environment and Women studies.
