India now has acquired the status of a reasonably mature democracy. It has conducted more than ten genertal elections successfully to its parliament after the promulgation of the constitution of India. The democratic traditions and institutions have taken roots. In order to strengthen the gross root democracy, the institution of a panchayat system has been evolved. Panchayati raj system is rooted om the history and culture of India. It is expected that for the political economic and social development of the villages the institutions of panchayati raj will go a long way inn achieving these objectives. This encyclopaedia has been prepared keeping in mind that Indian planners and administrators will be greatly helped by this kind of material.
