The history and polity on North-Eastern India has remained shrouded in mystery till recently. The British policy to the isolation to tribal areas is responsible for this blackout. Official documents are not available even to the bonafide researchers. In order to be able to construct an integrated history of the strategically important region and connect it to the mainstream of national history, archival documents are of vital importance. The author of the book has made a judicious selection of documents which will serve as a starting point for the exploration of the archives of North-Eastern India. Such documents have been compiled and classified in four parts beginning from the Treaty of Yandabo of 1826. An attempt has also been made to show the evolution of the administration of the NEFA and the break-up of North-Eastern India into present political set-up – the States of Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland and the two union territories of Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram. No relevant Regulation, Orders, Acts or Constitutional Provisions has been left out of this pioneering archival compilation.
