To say that the theme "Libraries and Information Centres as Profit Making Institutions" of the book is a burning issue is stating the obvious. This is because libraries and information centres were seen as conservative non-profit making organisations with traditional values and time-honoured practices. But this outlook seems to be changing due to the challenge of change–social, technological, economic and political changes–on the one side, and the pressure for accountability and the emergence of enterprise culture on the other. Consequentially, the slogan on everyone’s lips has been "Self-sufficiency" (financially) and/or "User pays" principle and "Profit-making". Thus, the need of the hour is for libraries and librarians to think of income-earning or resource/revenue generation and/or cost recovery activities.
