The book is an outcome of a series of three lectures delivered by Professor R.P. Misra in November 1996, at the ICSSR North Eastern Regional Centre, Shillong. It tries to understand, urbanization in contemporary India not only in the global context of industrial revolution but also in the context of historical development of undivided India, which developed the first planned urban centres of the world, famous the world over as Harappa and Mohenjo-daro. The book does not discount the fall of Harappan urban centres as a result of the Aryan invasion and suggests that probably they met their fate due to ecological reasons. The book also discusses the second phase of urbanization and gradually comes to the later periods. It further touches urbanization in south and the north-east and then comes to a sustainable urban future. In this book Professor Misra brings his long experience in research to formulate his views on various aspects of urbanization in India. The results of his formulations are not only of considerable academic interest but will also be equally useful to those concerned with planning.
