Recognizing the relationship between literacy and socioeconomic development of the country, the Govt. of India has launched total literacy campaigns in all the districts. Chittoor district is one of the districts to cover 6.25 lakh illiterates in the age group 9 to 35 years. The success of the campaign not only lies in eradication of illiteracy but also in retaining, nurturing and stabilizing it through using the same in the day-to-day activities of the target. Keeping the objectives and strategies adopted in implementing the programme, the present evaluation was undertaken to study various aspects of the programme such as motives for participation, reasons for drop-out, extent of literacy attained, participants, functionaries and community attitude towards the various aspects of the programme etc. Chapter I, of the book briefly narrates the importance of literacy, initiation and developments of the TLC of Chittoor district. The review of literature forms the second chapter. The chapter III presents the problem and objectives, scope of the study, limitations etc. The method of investigation constitutes chapter IV of the book. The chapter V Analysis and interpretation of the data presents the findings in two sections. Section I shows the findings relating to the literacy phase and section II presents the findings relating to the post-literacy stage. The chapter VI presents summary and conclusions of the study.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR P Adinarayana Reddy
Dr. P.A. Reddy, (b. 1957). He took his bachelor degree in Science (1978) and Education (1981) from Bangalore University, Post Graduation (1980) and Doctoral Degrees (1990) in Adult Education from S.V. University and M.Ed. (1984) from Anamalai University. He is at present with the Department of Adult Education in S.V. University Tirupati. He has undergone training in youth and Adult Education in Denmark and ad opportunities to study adult and non-formal education programmes in Denmark, Sweden and West Germany during visit to these countries. He has so far published 50 research papers in various reputed education, adult education and social science journals. He has also published six books viz., Adult Education in India, determinant of Instructor effectiveness, Reading Interests of Adults.
