In the Granth Sahib, one finds mention of a number of mythological gods, demons, persons, animals, birds, places, mountains, rivers, religious books, etc. All these things are fully explained in this book. The work will not only be extremely useful but will also shed light to those interested in the subject. Most of the Sikhs in India live in the Panjab. Before 1947, the State of Panjab or the land of five rivers was bounded and watered by Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej, but now only three rivers (Ravi, Beas and Sutlej) flow through the Indian Panjab. Panjabis comprise less than two and a half per cent of India’s population. The Sikhs have contributed a lot to the prosperity of Panjab, and are renowned for their hard work, great courage enterprise and expertise in mechanics. This Encyclopaedia of Sikh Religion and Culture aims at fulfilling the requirements of the modern student, general reader and religious communities. An index to names, subjects, etc., in the articles is given at the end of the book for the convenience of the readers.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Gobind Singh Mansukhani
Dr. G.S. Mansukhan (1915-1993) has authored many books on Sikhism and has devoted his life to spreading Sikh religion and culture. He has traveled around the world, furthering the Sikh religion, philosophy and culture, especially to Sikh youth. For his contribution to Sikh studies, he was awarded the 1991 Bhai Vir Singh International Award, presented by the present Finance Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh. He has also won some awards for his contribution to Sikh studies in foreign countries. He has served as the Principal of Khalsa College, Jullundar and Delhi, and later became a Deputy Secretary of the University Grants Commission, Government of India.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Ramesh Chander Dogra
Ramesh Chander Dogra received his M.Phil at the University of London and has written eleven books and twenty-five articles on many South Asian topics, particularly in the fields of Indology, Sikhism and Bhutan. He retired as Librarian (South Asian Studies), at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, in September 2002. In January 2003 New Year’s Honour List, in the UK, he was awarded MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for his contribution to South Asian Studies.
