Nehru needs no introduction to Indians. To those who had seen him he was an ideal to follow, to those who didn’t he was a man with many dimensions. How ever, when a man is alive a certain amount of emotion colours our vision and perhaps influences critical evaluation, not necessarily negative. With the passage of time comes certain amount of detachment which not only gives one an opportunity to evaluate but also a deeper understanding of the significance of his acts and deeds. The centenary of Nehru coming after nearly 25 years of his passing away has probably given us this opportunity to try and evaluate him without any emotion. This volume thus makes an attempt to present a critical evaluation of the words, thoughts and deeds of Nehru in terms of their significance in Indian history, economy, polity, culture and philosophy. Nehru as a person has become an Institution whose reverberations were felt not only by the contemporary society but also continued to be experienced years later. The present volume is an attempt at looking at Nehru in the light of our contemporary wisdom and experience.
