The book is a work on the development of agriculture in India ink regional perspective. On the basis of the agrarian system prevalent in the British India, the agricultural economy of the country has been divided into four regions, namely, Zemindari, Ryotwari, Mahalwari and Jagirdri. The level of agricultural development in the different regions in the country has been expressed in terms of agricultural efficiency represented by the composite index based on the total vector of five indicators, namely, crop intensity, irrigation intensity, per agricultural worker availability of net areas sown, percent of commercial crops in gross cropped area, and per unit areas productivity, each indicator having different values across the state/region. The index has been constructed taking the all India corresponding figures eyali to 100. The agricultural insputs like irrigation, better seeds, manures, fertillsers, land reclamation, improved agricultural implements etc. play vital role in increasing the agricultural efficiency. The regression coefficients of index of agricultural efficiency on indices of area under irrigation, per hectare availability of institutional credit, perhectare consumption of fertilizers, area under HYVS, posticides consumption and tractorisation have been found positive and stability significant. Growing regional imbalances in the agricultural development can be corrected only by bringing about for reaching changes in the strategy of development. The situation demands a shift in the national allocation of funds and projects in favour of the poorer regions, alongwith a radical change in the order of development priorities.
