Environmental sociology assumes a significant position in studying the divergence and conflict with nature and the causes and extent of environmental problems among the diverse actors involved. The subject matter of environmental sociology is, in a sense, straightforward, consisting of social aspects of environmental problems and environmental issues. This notion, however, obscures the fact that there are two general categories of environmentally related phenomenon that need to be accounted for by environmental sociological theories.

Dr. P.K. Muthukumar is lecturer in Sociology, Directorate of Distance Education, Annamalai University. He has specialized in Environmental Sociology and his Ph.D., thesis is on Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development. To his credit, he has presented many papers at International and National Seminars and Conferences and also he has a few publications in reputed journals.
