The Akali movement was born during 1920’s when Sikhs of all hues, creeds and castes decided to rid their Shrines of Mahants and government toadies. As the government resorted to a policy of suppression, the movement gathered political colour. Eventually, the Sikhs won the day and Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee came into being as a result of an Act passed by the Punjab Assembly.
