Shah Jahan was third son of emperor Jahangir. Shah Jahan had the apology for the murder of his relations; and the manners of the people were for much adapted to an idea of necessity in such a case, that they acquiesced without murmuring under his government. He mounted the throne of the Moguls in Agra, on the first of February of the year 1628 of the Christian Era; and, according to the pompous manner eastern princes, assumed the titles of The True Star of the Faith, the Second Lord of the Happy conjunctions, Mohammed, the King of the world. He was born at Lahore on the fifth of January 1592, and on the day of accession, he was thirty-six solar years and twenty-eight days old. To drive away the memory of the late assassinations from the minds of the people, and to gratify the nobles, who had crowded from every quarter to Agra, he ushered in his reign with a festival, which exceeded every thing of the kind known in that age, in magnificence and expense.
