The news media are rapidly becoming involved with the Internet; so rapidly in fact that what is states here may be largely outdated by the time this book is published. News on the Internet is a moving target and we can only offer a snap shot of this board on the wing. Everything about the Internet and the World Wide Web, it’s been said, is about the future –and the future has been arriving faster than anyone predicated. The relevance of the Internet for journalism and the news business is perhaps apparent. Publishers, broadcasters, and journalists were “early adopts†of this explosive information revolution. However, neither they, nor anyone else, seem to know just where this brave new world of communication is headed. No consensus exists as to how journalism will be changed by the Internet, but no one doubts that change is coming and fast. The future of cyberspace itself is murky and yet exciting. Newspaper publishers and other media managers worry about how they can fit into the changing scene and still prosper. Concerned journalists wonder as well how the traditional values and standards of goof journalism can survive in the turbulent world of the Internet.
