The ethnic mosaic of North-East India offers a fascinating area of academic discourse which needs to be examined for a clear understanding of the elements of separatism or integrated which necessarily carry socio-political ramifications. Against this background, North-East India Council for Social Science research, Shillong, organised a seminar on Ethnic Issues, secularism and Conflict resolution in North-east India. This book is the outcome of that seminar. It attempts to assess the contours of ethno-cultural plurality in the social dynamics of the region. Essentially, the focus is on the manner in which ethnicity is seeking fulfillment of aspirations arising out of its exposure to the forces of modernization. The book highlights the fact that contemporary North-East India remains witness to the momentous developments arising out of ethnic mobilization. The overriding need for a secular policy, however, remains unquestioned.
