Prepared by some unknown Indian Scholar and supposed to be the Life-Member of the Society for the resuscitation of Indian Literature of CALCUTTA and Forwarded by Dr. Jyotir Mitra Professor of Basic Principles Institute of Medical Sciences, B.H.U. The aforesaid booklet, published in 1899, is solely based on Dr. Thomas A. Wise’s monumental work entitled ‘Commentary on the Hindu System of Medicine’ (Calcutta-1845; Repr. London-in 1860 & 1900). The present work, consisting of 131 pages and reproduced after a long gap of 87 years with the scholarly foreword by Prof. Jyotir Mitra, a reputed authority on History of Medicine, is a monumental gift to the western Medical world. The book endeavours to exhibit Indian Medical glory on sound reasonings and corroborates the scientific advancements made by great Indian scientists-seers. The present booklet contains seventeen chapters and they cover an account of origin of Medical science during Vedic period and onwards with the analysis of subject matter of Carak and Susruta. It also touches the status of physicians with a succinct material of Anatomy and Physiology and also annexed with Material Medica, pharmacy, Hygiene and Surgery practiced by the ancient Hindus. The present booklet is an addition to the History of Ayurveda. It is very useful for those who wish to know the theme of Medical science of India in nutshell. It has been composed in lucid style, attractive language and understandable manner.
